While Slanted Door is opening this new location in Napa, it all began with an idea to open a Vietnamese crêpe stand or a noodle shop in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Charles Phan searched for a location but was told that there were already too many Vietnamese restaurants in the area. He moved the search to his own neighborhood: the Mission. He quickly found an available space on Valencia Street.

The Slanted Door was born in 1995 with the goal of elevating Vietnamese food to the next level—modern design, sustainable local ingredients, quality teas, and wine pairings. The Slanted Door was quickly recognized and became too small to accommodate the reservation requests. The growing restaurant moved to South of Market in 2002. It was there that the team integrated a craft cocktail program, which was one of the first restaurants in San Francisco to offer craft cocktail menus. The Slanted Door moved again to the San Francisco Ferry Building in 2004.

We had lunch and we love their lunch menu. The chicken salad was outstanding and their beef Pho is one of the best I have ever tasted.

The food is always great and last night did not disappoint. The pork chop was tender and flavorful. Waiter great. The only downside were two large tables with loud people. Does not take away from the great food and service at any rate.

The food was amazing! Smoked duck with fried rice, shaking beef, crispy spring rolls, bok choy and mushrooms. Meagan was extremely attentive and efficient, very friendly without being cloying. Will definitely go back to try all the other menu items. The wine list was interesting and well chosen. We had a delicious bottle of Grüner at $100.

Sloooow “Single Female Diner” service. My appetizer wasn’t cleared for at least 25 minutes AFTER I finished it. I get the sense that service is worse in many restaurants that automatically add the service charge. Maybe there’s no reason to provide good service. I would go to Slanted Door when out first opened on Valencia Street. It felt special and was cozy and amazing. The Napa had none of that, and it was so disappointing. The table near me had three kids under six running around the room while the parents were mesmerized by their phones. At one point the boy climbed onto the back of the father’s chair and stood on it, hanging on him. I bet in a year there’ll be some lousy chain restaurant occupying this space.
