Shanghai 1814 is an exceptional destination restaurant in an iconic listed building in the heart of Southampton. You won’t have experienced anything quite like it. This is where East meets West in a cacophony of flavour, style, colour and vibrancy. Shanghai 1814 is so-called as the owner’s ancestors opened their first restaurant in Shanghai in 1814 – the time of the Qing Dynasty, China’s final imperial dynasty.

This combination of traditional European architecture with exuberant Chinese interior design is dynamic and exciting. Welcome to Shanghai 1814 and enjoy the ultimate dining experience.

Wow-factor interiors are decadent and glamorous, draped in dazzling chandeliers and adorned with cherry blossom. The menus feature contemporary Chinese dishes that are fresh and flavoursome, created by a Chef who previously worked at Michelin-starred Hakkasan in London’s Mayfair.

The service was slower than slow. It took 35 mins to get a drink. The food was okay. It tasted good but was served quickly and was cold.

Vibrant restaurant on a Saturday night (lots of noise from big parties upstairs) which didn’t bother us but may put some diners off. Great decor. We were told food would be amazing but were sadly disappointed, nice enough but nothing to get excited about and not cheap either. Service was fine, waiter not particularly happy with working conditions, he was perfectly pleasant to us but it did take away from the dining experience. Sadly won’t be returning again for all the above reasons.

Third time here - food always fantastic and authentic, with a wonderful atmosphere and ambiance. Even better tonight with a surprise Lion Dance through the restaurant to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Wonderful experience with great food and attentive staff. Chinese new year so an added bonus was the dance of the Lions. They surprised my husband with a complimentary birthday cake. We had the sharing menu which was more than enough for 2 and all great flavours. Having the sharing menu gave us a chance to try things we hadn’t tried before. The decor is outstanding and added to the whole experience
