This is arguably the best Japanese restaurant in Pittsburgh. Outstanding food, service, and view. It's not cheap, but good Japanese never is. They even do a 16-course omakase on Thursdays! I can wait to come back and try it.

Overall our experience at Otaru was good. Amazing views and a really good server (Angela). Some growing pains were evident for a relatively new restaurant, understaffed, slower than normal service, a few mix ups with food coming out to the wrong table and some items on the menu not available. The drinks are good and certainly the raw fish dishes are their speciality. (We really liked the yellowtail jalepeno app).

Dinner was excellent. Our server Angela was great - recommended the Tartar layer which was delicious. Everything was very good will definitely be back.

Food was delicious and our server Angela provided fantastic service and was very knowledgable about the menu. Hands down the best sushi I’ve had in Pittsburgh and you can’t beat the view

Pretty fantastic. Stylish interesting space with a great view. It was loud due to very loud party at the adjacent table. They were using their outdoor voices. I ordered the “Otaru Experience,” nine authentic Japanese dishes for $128. Apart from one, they were all really delicious, interesting, different. The sushi was spectacular, clearly the best you can get in Pittsburgh. My one quibble was with the Roasted Faroe Island Salmon which was one of the nine, and the only hot dish. The salmon was a bit overcooked. It also was absolutely swimming in a large pool of sauce that was, I think, Dijon mustard based, and/or maybe citrus-y. The dish was simply WAY over sauced—far too much sauce and the flavor of the sauce totally overpowered the salmon. This was a real shame because the other courses were subtle, sophisticated, and elegant. This one was clumsy. For that price point, there should really not be ANY missteps. The salmon was a big one. And since it was the 8th course, the last before dessert, the memory of it is the strongest, tending to cause me to forget the first 7 courses, and thus leaving me with a feeling of disappointment.

I’ve had my eye on Otaru since they opened in April and we finally made it in for a date night. Everything was so fresh and delicious, the staff were friendly and knowledgeable, the ambiance was amazing and so were the views. Of course it’s a bit pricey but it’s on Mount Washington so we went in fully expecting that. We had a few hand rolls (all amazing), the chicken Gyoza (please order this it’s perfect), the Tartar layer (very good), the pork buns (my FAVORITE part of the meal) and the Longevity Noodles (very good). Looking forward to the next time we can go back!

Really nice experience here at OTARU, which I consider as one of the best Japanese dining places here at Pittsburgh. Thanks to Angela who carefully introduced the sashimi fish types to us.

My partner and I went here in hopes to have delicious sushi, as I used to live and Seattle and here in Pittsburgh it’s a rarity to find quality fish understandably. However that was not the case here. We loved everything we ordered. We had the tartar, the sashimi treasure box and the beef udon. The treasure box was a fun way to see what all Otaru had to offer. Our service was excellent. Angela was our waiter and she was warm, knowledgeable and very approachable. Highly recommend!
