The Plough isn't your average countryside pub. Sitting on a quiet lane in a quintessentially English village, The Plough was set to be sold off the developers when 120 members of the community came together to invest, and save, their local. After its purchase and renovation, the Yates family took over the kitchen and opened the pub's small, but proud, restaurant, Bowleys.

Head Chef Alex Yates is still very early on in his career but though only in his early twenties, he has already spent two years in the kitchens at The Goring Hotel in London, as well as having gained experience with Rick Stein and even once cooking for the Queen.

Bowleys menus have a traditional feel and adhere to classic, English fare with a fine dining twist. There are several options to choose between including a tasting menu, set lunch, a la carte, brunch and Sunday lunch. The tasting menu is the jewel in Bowleys crown and consists of five courses, with an optional sixth.

Exceptional from start to finish. A real find outside of a major city. Attentive, professional and friendly staff. Genuinely superb food, a very good and reasonable wine list and some nice cocktails. One of the best near Sevenoaks.

We were given a gift voucher for Bowley's for Christmas. Having not heard of this restaurant I explored the internet, reading through the reviews and studying the menu. I booked through OpenTable which is always very easy to do, and choose the 12 course taster menu. Bowley's is situated in a beautiful sleepy village which we loved! We entered through the car park in to the bar area, 10minutes before our reservation and was given a warm welcome by the bar tender. He gave us the option to have a drink in the bar or be seated at our table. We choose to have a drink in the bar to take in our surroundings and warm up a little! The bar was filled with period pictures and had authentic touches which complemented the age of the property. Once seated in the restaurant our waitress was on hand to settle us in. The menu was presented and we were asked if any minor adjustments were required. This is rare for a tasting menu as most restaurants take a strong stance on no changes, a lovely touch in my opinion, but not required by us. You can also choose to pair wines with the food. As designated driver, I nursed a glass of Sauvignon Blanc across the first few courses, which complemented the dishes well. As mentioned we enjoyed twelve course, which had a vast range of local produce. I particularly enjoyed the buttermilk bun and artichoke dumpling from the savoury selection, then the malted milk from the deserts. You could taste the time and passion taken to prepare each element of the dish as everything was balanced and complementary to each other. The Manjari surprised me the most. The first spoonful of chocolate torte overpowered my taste buds with the taste of very strong coffee but after the second bite it was no longer as potent and you settled in to the desert. This was a great experience for my palate, and exactly what I was hoping for. I wish Bowley's all the best with their journey to achieving a Michelin star.

Delicious food and lovely friendly staff. Between our table we ordered most of the menus and it was all delicious and beautifully presented, the only dish I wouldn’t order again was the side of cabbage which was a little too pretentious but otherwise everything else was exquisite especially the reductions and sauces! It definitely fine dining so don’t expect hearty platefuls of food but three courses with the addition of the complimentary horderves and large portion of freshly baked artisan breads means you don’t walk away hungry. The only slight let down for me was the decor. The tables were a little lackluster and the ladies toilet in the bar side was not somewhere you’d want to frequent! Our particular table was right by the door which anyone who walked out of neglected to shut mainly because the pile of coats right next to it made it tricky- only really a problem for the winter months and the staff were quick to notice and close it if they were in the room at the time. However, this didn’t detract from the presentation of the food which more than made up for the interior. The staff were all very friendly and polite- just the right balance of attentiveness. I’d definitely go back again for another special occasion and would recommend it to friends- just ask to not sit by the door!

A real treat to come here on NYE and the a la carte menu. The amuse bouche and crab tartlets were mouthfuls of heaven. Bread to die for. Main courses were interesting and tasty, but wish you didn’t have to pay extra for vegetables! Sadly none of the desserts tickled our fancy and in all honesty our budget was spent. Luckily chocolates are served with coffee so all good. Wouldn’t think twice about going again, but would look out for lunchtime deals. ALL the staff we interacted with were lovely. HNY

Feels like this place is going off the boil a little bit. Amuse bouche has been dropped from the set lunch menu and the venison tagliatelle main course was disappointing - overwhelmed by a tomato sauce, which was the only real flavour it had. Otherwise the risotto starter was excellent and the chocolate desert was good, though fairly ordinary
