Der damals 23 Jahre alte Joe Jahraus eröffnete im Jahr 1912 an der Biegung der Forest Avenue die Laguna Lumber Company. Er und sein Vater (Zigarrenmacher, Vorsteher des Postamts und Immobilienmakler) erbauten das wunderbare, an die französische Normandie erinnernde Gebäude, das heute hier steht. Vor der Eröffnung des Holzlagers wurde Baumaterial von Maultieren geschleppt oder mit der Strömung hereingebracht, weshalb Laguna Beach auch nur weniger als 300 ständige Bewohner hatte. Nach der Eröffnung des Holzlagers begann die Gegend zu wachsen und wurde in beispielloser Geschwindigkeit von einem Dorf mit Zelten zu einer blühenden Stadt. Laguna Lumber wurde 73 Jahre lang betrieben, 62 Jahre davon hier. Die Architektur der Firma wurde auch von Joes Einsatz im 1. Weltkrieg beeinflusst und ist außerordentlich beispielgebend für die Ästhätik der Stadt. Fachwerk, Lehmwände und Schindeldächer zieren daher viele der Geschäftsfassaden und Wohnhäuser in der Innenstadt. Heute erwartet Sie im 384 Forest das Lumberyard, ein modernes amerikanisches Restaurant.
