Oma's Hideaway is a vibrant, maximalist restaurant inspired by the life and spirit of Chef Thomas Pisha Duffly's grandmother, Kiong Tien “Tina” Vandenberg. Her ability to adapt, to make the most out of limited resources, and to stay creative while projecting warmth and brightness is the guiding force behind Oma’s Hideaway.Born during the pandemic as a pop-up in the Gado Gado parking lot, Oma’s became a permanent beacon of iridescent light in Portland’s Richmond neighborhood in 2021. The menu draws from Tina’s life story, taking influence from the craveable, soul-satisfying hawker food of Singapore and Malaysia and “turning up the volume” with exaggerated yet balanced flavors in Chef Tom’s signature style. The restaurant is known for its popular seafood boils, po’boys, and fried or blackened seafood (which the restaurant will gladly smother in étouffée sauce); however, the restaurant’s crawfish étouffée —crawfish tail meat swimming in a buttery sauce of onions, peppers, celery, and garlic — is the people’s favorite.

The staff is very friendly and service was excellent. The manager greeted us and checked with us, as we were leaving,as well. There was a mix up regarding Sunday Brunch menus. The web site didn’t say that the Happy Valley location did not offer brunch and a brunch menu is even on the site. Evidently, the other locations have brunch, but HV does not. However,the manager told us that they would begin to offer brunch, sometime in January.

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience! We ordered cocktails and then tried out the tasting menu, which did not disappoint. Our server recommended a lovely young red wine. Everything was great!
