Spike Africa, auch Präsident des Pazifiks genannt, war der letzte der großen Schonerkapitäne, die von der Westküste aus zur See fuhren. Er erlernte die Schifffahrt auf der "K.V. Kruse", einem fünfmastigen Schoner, der Holz von Seattle nach Alaska transportierte. Spike ist am besten bekannt für seine abenteuerliche Reise mit dem Schauspieler Sterling Hayden und ihren Familien, die 1958 in Tahiti endete und in Haydens klassischem Meeresroman "Der Wanderer" festgehalten ist. Als Marine Leutnant kämpfte Spike im zweiten Weltkrieg in der blutigen Schlacht um die Insel Peleliu, die in der HBO-Miniserie "Pacific" dargestellt ist. Als Teilzeit-Laien-Schauspieler spielte Spike im Film "Cinderella Liberty" mit. Er war eine Legende und in praktisch jedem Hafen an der Westküste bekannt als Freigeist und einer der letzten Seemänner der alten Schule. Vielen Dank für Ihren Besuch.
