In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 25 craft gins available.World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. Water Lane is a restaurant based within a working market garden in the High Weald of Kent. Guided by the seasons, our menu reflects its sense of place in the English countryside where we grow our own vegetables and use local suppliers. Our ever changing menu is simple but prepared with imagination and care by our Head Chef Jed Wrobel and his team.The Good Food Guide 2023 describes us as 'A contender for one of the most charming eateries in Kent, it's pretty much impossible to resist the lure of this rural restaurant tucked away in a delightful walled garden...' Reassuringly good as usual. The smoked salmon starter melted in my mouth. My duck curry was good but I didn’t enjoy it as much as a prawn curry I’ve had there in the past. Always lovely ambience and wonderful service.

Wow! We went to The Poet for the first time last night to celebrate a significant birthday and it was fantastic. From the moment we entered the building we were made to feel very special. The food was amazing and the staff very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed every bit of the evening. I would highly recommend The Poet to anyone wanting to experience top quality restaurant food and wine.

Our Christmas dinner at Essence was perfect in every way. The food was absolutely delicious and perfectly served. The staff were very warm and friendly. All the thoughtful little extras were much appreciated. Everything was memorable and special and we may make this a family Christmas tradition!
