The Bateman Arms was built c.1750 by Sir James Bateman (Lord Mayor Of London) as a building where his Estate workers would collect on pay day. Lovely pub/restaurant in romantic location by the river. The food was well-cooked and presented and was good value - I had fish soup and lamb. I liked that the plate was full; not stingy portions. Meal included good quality veg. I would recommend arriving early for a drink beforehand in the cosy bar or in the lounge.

An excellent meal in friendly and comfortable surroundings. My wife’s beetroot soup was the best she has tasted, and the mains of duck breast, imaginatively served with roast beetroot and elderberry jelly, and sea bass on a bed of cauliflower and hazelnut with parsley sauce, were really accomplished cooking. The quiche savarin, which we shared, was equally good. Highly recommended.
