Grace, bei den Mandolas nur „Mama“ genannt, wurde in eine Familie sizilianischer Einwanderer in Louisiana geboren. Sie hatte ein außergewöhnliches Talent fürs Kochen, legte viel Wert auf italienische Gastfreundschaft und war von einem tiefen Glauben beseelt. Jeden Samstag buk sie das Brot für ihre legendären dreistündigen sizilianischen Sonntagsessen von Hand. In der neuen Heimat der Familie in Louisiana flossen neue, interessante Geschmacksrichtungen in ihre Rezepte mit ein.
