No one's going to raise any eyebrows if you do, but you'd be missing out on some of the treasures that lie deeper into the menu.Kahaani itself is classic Lygon: a long, narrow dining hall, with funky industrial lighting and exposed brick down one side. The front window opens out onto the street, letting the breeze and Lygon nightlife waft in.

Our story starts in the Indian valley of Kashmir. We are three generations who have been in the restaurants and hotels field. My grandfather started his humble beginnings at the Cecil Hotel in Shimla in the late 1930s; my father also joined the trade at Hyatt Hotels, from which he migrated us from India to Australia.Then I, Ankit, decided to open my own restaurant. Having been in the hospitality industry for the past decade, I learned from the great chefs of Australia and brilliant hotel proprietors, gathering all the knowledge and experience from previous generations. It’s Indian food done a bit differently and it tastes great. The wait staff were great. They took time to discuss Kahaani’s dishes, how they were different, and help with suggestions. We chose the Make My Feast Banquet option that allowed us to sample the menu and at $57 pp was great value. We were not disappointed in any of the dishes. My personal favourites were the Daal Pakwaan and the Parda Biryani. I’m looking forward to our next visit.

Incredible food that tastes of Kerala, in a laneway location that somehow says Melbourne and India at once. What a great part of the Melbourne dining scene. Go.

The meals were substatial and tasty. The Thali was super and so was the Chicken 65 as well as all the other dishes. The service was great the friendly staff always there to help in any way.. The ambience was soothing just needed that music to make it a bit more lively.
