With elegant premises situated above street level at the corner of Pennington Street and Jardine’s Bazaar in the East Point neighbourhood of Causeway Bay, Shalimar Indian Cuisine offers a high-class South Asian restaurant experience. Make a meal from great shareable starters like the tandoori mixed grill, chow down on chicken biryani, and mop up the creamy, nutty sauced of a navratan korma with plenty of freshly oven-baked garlic naan. The focus here is on traditional, imperial Mughlai cuisine, an ancient art with origins in the court kitchens of northern India, and a tandoor oven that uses charcoal for the ultimate in smoky flavour. Get stuck into this Hong Kong Indian restaurant’s offering without risking the bank by opting for one of the set lunch and dinner menus or explore the a la carte menu – its huge size means that you’re unlikely to get to the bottom of it.

From Hong Kong Island you have to trek deep into the New Territories to find it, but rest assured that if you are on the hunt for an authentic Himalayan experience then Shangri-La Curry House in Yuen Long is about as close as you’re going to get. Of course the food delivers on expectation, with lashings of rich, colourful Nepalese and Indian curries alongside some of the softest naan bread you’ll ever try, variously dressed poppadums and some hearty Central Asian-style meat and rice dishes. Our pick for anyone would be the baingan bharta, a gorgeous vegetarian curry of minced, tender eggplant and fragrant spices that even carnivores will come back for. The true Nepalese experience you get here on On Ning Road doesn’t end with the food, though, it’s also the peaceful ambience (largely set by colourful murals of Nepalese mountain scenes) and friendly, passionate, helpful but non-invasive staff, who make you feel right at home – if your home happens to be in the Himalayas.
